OKINAWA

Okinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture and consists of hundreds of the Ryūkyū Islands in a chain over 1,000 km long which stretches from Kyushu to Taiwan. Before becoming a prefecture during the early Meiji period, Okinawa was a semi-independent kingdom called “Ryūkyū” that lasted for 400 years, influenced by both Japan and China. Their Ryukyuan culture survived throughout the time until now, which is significantly different from other areas of Japan, and you will still see it in their food, art, language, housing, etc. This subtropical destination has countless of beautiful beaches, coral reefs and marine life, which makes it a popular vacation place as well.
