SETOUCHI

“Setouchi” is the name of the region surrounding the Seto Inland Sea that lies between main island and Shikoku Island, consisting of 7 prefectures which are Hyogo, Okayama,
Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Tokushima, Kagawa and Ehime.

The Seto Inland Sea, one of the first designated regions as a National Park in Japan, is home to more than 1000 islands scattered across which presents a breathtaking seascape. Among the islands, the eastern region has gained attention from all over the world as the “Art Islands”, having the most unique and creative museums, modern art exhibitions, architectures that beautifully integrate with their surrounding nature, and also hosts the Setouchi Triennale Art Festival held every 3 years.

ART ISLANDS

One of the main things that attract many travelers from all over world coming to the Setouchi is “Art”. Especially “Naoshima” , known as the art island along with Teshima and Inujima, is a truly unique small island with many museums that exhibits various artworks of Japanese and international famous artists.

One of the most emblematic works of art of this island is the red and yellow “Pumpkin” by artist Yayoi Kusama, which is exhibited outdoors on the island. In addition, many museums are designed by the famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who is inspired by the concept of preserving the surrounding nature, while appreciating the beauty of the island through the works of art. The concept behind this art project that started around 30 years ago, is the coexistence of people and nature, to create new things out of old pieces, and the interaction between people gathering to this place. ISLANDS OF NATURE AND CULTURE

You will find untouched nature in these rural islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Go hiking to encounter the majestic 1200 year old camphor tree that is overlooking a tiny island with only 20 inhabitants, stroll around a historical district with houses that are 200 years old or go cycling down a hill along a beautiful rice terrace by the peaceful waters.
