Encounter Japan Travel held a webinar offering a new perspective on Setouchi, the region surrounding the Seto Inland Sea, renowned for blending nature, culture, and contemporary art. This destination has become a key stop for itineraries focused on cultural experiences beyond the traditional.
Naoshima: the jewel of contemporary art
The most famous island in Setouchi is home to iconic works by Yayoi Kusama, such as her polka-dotted pumpkins, as well as museums designed by architect Tadao Ando, including the Chichu Art Museum and Benesse House Museum. In addition, projects such as the Art House Project transform traditional houses into art installations.
Teshima and Inujima: a dialogue between art and landscape
Teshima invites visitors to explore at a slow pace, with outdoor installations integrated into nature. Its Teshima Art Museum, shaped like a drop of water, offers one of the most unique art experiences in Japan.
Inujima, on the other hand, transforms a former copper refinery into a museum that reflects on modernization and sustainability.
The Setouchi Triennale
Every three years, the islands of the region welcome international artists to a festival that lasts 107 days and is divided into three seasons: spring, summer, and autumn. This initiative has turned Setouchi into a creative laboratory that attracts visitors from all over the world.
Nature and gastronomy
Beyond art, Setouchi also offers destinations such as Shodoshima, known for its soy sauce production and olive groves that give it a Mediterranean feel, and Kitagishima, with its fishing atmosphere and long tradition of granite extraction.
